FORMER NEW RIDER ALLEN KEMP PASSES AWAY
It's with a great amount of sadness that we relay the news that former NRPS bassist Allen Kemp passed away after a long battle with cancer on June 25, 2009. Allen took over the bass playing in the band after Steve Love left in 1978, and he remained a vital part of the band through the early 1980's. He made a major contribution to the band's 1980 album Feelin' Alright. Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends.

FILLMORE: THE LAST DAYS - NOW AVAILABLE ON DVD
It's been a long time coming, but the long out of print movie, Fillmore: The Last Days, has just been released by Rhino. Featured in this great flick is a wonderful rehearsal jam with Jerry Garcia and the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Once the epicenter of the West Coast psychedelic music scene, the Fillmore Auditorium gave birth to the “San Francisco sound,” making and breaking some of the world's most popular artists, until shutting its doors in the summer of '71. Originally released in 1972, Fillmore: The Last Days, chronicles the closing of this world famous institution and offers a portrait of its legendary promoter, Bill Graham.
Along with showcasing some of the very best performances from those 5 final nights of all-star concerts, the documentary goes behind-the-scenes to uncover the magic and mythology of a captivating moment in musical history and features liner notes from former Rolling Stone Senior Editor Ben Fong-Torres. Other highlights from DVD include Santana's cover of the Miles Davis track “In A Silent Way,” Jefferson Airplane's cutting edge “Volunteers/We Can Be So Good Together” combo, Grateful Dead classics and more.

Several of the Nelson/Hunter tunes like "Ghost Train Blues," "Rockin' With Nona," "Down The Middle" and the title track are already concert favorites. Buddy Cage is laying down plenty of his classic pedal steel work and Michael Falzarano, who produced the album, kicks in two of his own songs, "Something In The Air Tonight" and "Carl Perkins Wears The Crown." Drummer Johnny Markowski contributes his country-rockin' "Higher," and bassist Ronnie Penque delivers the sweet "Olivia Rose." Several of the tunes have our old friend Mookie Siegel sitting in on ke ys as well. Lyrics for all of these new songs can be found in our Lyrics section.

NEW RIDERS AT WINTERLAND
12/31/77 LIVE ARCHIVE CD NOW AVAILABLE
We've been listening to your requests for some time now, and we're happy to announce this Archive Series release from the latter half of the '70s and a year in particular that had the NRPS putting on some incredibly smokin' shows. New Year's Eve '77-'78 had the Riders opening up for the Grateful Dead at San Francisco's historic Winterland Arena, and it was the first time they'd been back on a bill with the Dead in the Bay Area since 1974. Emotions were running high, the air was a buzz as it was New Year's Eve after all, and the music is tight, the band is focused and puts on a show loaded with incredible energy and a great song selection. There's favorites like "Hello Mary Lou," "Fifteen Days Under the Hood," "Henry," "Glendale Train" and one of the all time top versions of "Portland Woman." Check out all the details on this show on the Live
Archives page. Big thanks to Jeffrey Norman for a great job mastering this, Betty Cantor-Jackson for recording it 30+ years ago, and to Bob Minkin for the great photos from the show.

Austin, Texas, 1975. The “Outlaw Country” movement
was reaching its peak with weekly musical meetings of hippies and
rednecks at the 1500 capacity Armadillo World Headquarters. The
New Riders had been making Austin a home away from home for a few
years by the time this middle night of a three-night run of performances
came about. The band lineup at this show includes bassist Skip Battin,
who had been in the band for a full year now. Live at the Armadillo
was mastered directly off of the original 1/4 track reel to reel
recording and captures this night just as it was—in all of
its hot, sweaty, beer-soaked and smoke-filled glory.
